Roasting At Silver Joe's roasting facility in Seattle, Washington we use high tech “fluid bed roasters,” which produce coffee characterized by a clean, smooth taste. The fluid bed machine creates “clean” coffees by forcing high velocity air through a bed of beans, levitating them in a regular pattern within the roasting chamber. Since the walls of the chamber are not heated, the beans cannot scorch, and the machine pulls the smoke and other roasting by–products away from the beans as fresh air enters the roasting chambers. The roasting process eliminates the coating of coffee beans with oils that produce bitter and acidic tastes, which is a common result when using a higher temperature drum roaster.
